Value: 2.0

The initial fee is high, and now more update fees to keep it working. Original purchasers are now forced to pay for upgrades when they want to change Mac. Great way to punish those who bought it back when it was a mess of bugs.

I am a long time user and it does a reasonably job, but good be improved a lot. And that's the point, the app is not being developed anymore. It is now may 2025 and the latest update is build number 24291, version 2.0 from october 2024. See the text in the description: "Regularly Updated - One release is not the end of it! Like all releases, we never stop improving and improvising where it's needed." That is clearly not the case. What they do however is send you a yearly bill for actually doing nothing. I once contacted the company why it doesn't have an update version/ version check. "it was ready and would be incorporated in te next build". That was some 2, 3 years ago. My subscription, because that's what it is will be cancelled. It's a dead horse.

It's compatible only with Thunderbird 9x, not compatible with 10x. And there is no mention on their site, no update announce in the application and no blog to keep current customers.

I examined the three top email backup apps based not just on the product features and functions, but the support. Too often, we're sold on promises from a fancy website, only to be let down when we run into issues with the app soon after buying it. That said, I love everything about Mail Backup X. It's easy to set up with support for all major email apps, has a simple interface that gives you a snapshot of the status of up to five separate backups, plus you can drill down deep into the folders when you need to. I particularly like that you can not only save it to your Mac but also mirror that to one or more online sites. That said, most of all, I love the support. I had a number of major issues after an apocalyptic meltdown (I lost more than a dozen folders with over 1500 emails, many were critical and dated back more than a decade. Also, many remaining folders and emails have been corrupted). John was able to work through this with me for more than a week before I had put any money down on the table. I'm still trying to find the missing emails from other sources (most, I realise, are gone forever) but at least now, with Mail Backup X, I have confidence my emails will survive Armageddon.

For several versions it requires at least 10.13. And it is also not compatible with 10.15, at least in my configuration the penultimate version crashes the computer. Only by reinstalling the antepenultimate one have I managed to get it to work again. I'll have to test if this works or not. And in reality, as I imagine, it also requires something even more up-to-date, and not even the programmer seems to be aware of it, as usual.
